Title: Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief (Mark's take)
Post by: Estin Dwarfslayer on March 06, 2010, 10:56:03 AM
I was reading Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief (Mark's take) over at http://www.sfcrowsnest.com/articles/features/2010/Percy-Jackson--The-Olympians-The-Lightning-Thief-Marks-take-14633.php and I have to say I didn't quite agree with the review - I suppose it is fun, but I was just put off by how similar the film is to the template of the Harry Potter books/movies. Swap sorcery by magic for sorcery by demigod blood, and you have almost the same series, do you not? This put me off a bit to be honest.

These things are always a little derivative.

How many prior fantasy books did Harry Potter riff off?

The cheek of JK, claiming they're not fantasy novels!

It's just standard film-making recipes much beloved of film company accountants.

I gave up on Hollywood movies when they swapped plots for SFX budgets.

These things are always bashed out to a forumla, more is the pity.

Brave the (wo)man who can stand alone.
