"The fights don't occur in well-lit, supercool, car commercial-looking environments," del Toro says in response to Bay's knock on other robot movies.

Han Solo was the best char. by far in the first three movies (the real first three ones, not the silly Cloned up prequels). Having him return is a great move. I expect there will be lots of flashbacks to a young Han too played by a different actor to Mr Ford. Great!

« on: October 19, 2012, 05:32:30 AM »
At age 86, Corman is still making movies. His latest follows the standard schlock format of seminaked chicks fighting (in 3-D!) — these girls are 50 feet tall, so we’re talking B-I-G boobs!

The Diogenes Club / Steampunk game review: Dishonored!
« on: October 17, 2012, 09:35:32 AM »
The juxtaposition between the Victorian English architectural style and the ubiquitous whale-oil-powered steampunk technology creates a unique world that's a pleasure to explore.

« on: October 12, 2012, 08:14:58 AM »
Scores of disappointed rioters queued up this morning to return goods they had mistakenly looted from Games Workshop. The crestfallen thieves had raided the store hoping for a PS3 or Nintendo bounty but arrived home to find they had stolen a box containing 300 unpainted Orcs and a board game called Beyond the Ultraforest of Kwang.

This mystery tale surrounds the baffling double murder of Madame L'Espanaye and her daughter in the Rue Morgue, a street in Paris. Newspaper accounts of the murder reveal that the mother's throat was so badly cut that her head is barely attached and the daughter, after being strangled, has been stuffed into the chimney.

Conventions and events / MARK GATISS at UK FantasyCon.
« on: June 13, 2012, 11:06:18 AM »
FANTASYCON 2012 is delighted to announce the addition of two Special Media Guests to complement our already stellar line-up of Guests of Honour.

Actor, author and playwright MARK GATISS is a quarter of the team who created the award-winning comedy/horror series The League of Gentlemen for the BBC. He also scripted the three-part Christmas portmanteau Crooked House and the 2010 TV movie of H.G. Wells’ First Men in the Moon, and he co-created the international hit TV series Sherlock with Steven Moffat.

As an actor, he has appeared in all the above shows, along with episodes of Being Human, Psychoville, Nighty Night, Clone, Jekyll, Funland, Dr. Terrible’s House of Horrible, Randall & Hopkirk {Deceased}, The Wind in the Willows and Midsomer Murders.

Mark is also an author, and his books include the "Lucifer Box" trilogy, The Vesuvius Club, The Devil in Amber and Black Butterfly, and four Doctor Who novels, along with a biography of Hollywood film director James Whale.

ROBIN HARDY is an author, playwright, film director and producer, best known for his 1973 cult classic The Wicker Man, starring Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee and Diane Cilento. Today it is justifiably regarded as a classic of British cinema.

He followed it in 1986 with the Irish serial killer thriller The Fantasist, featuring Christopher Cazenove and Timothy Bottoms, and he co-scripted and produced the rarely-seen Forbidden Sun (aka Bulldance, 1989), a mystery based around ancient Cretan rituals starring Lauren Hutton and Cliff De Young.

His latest release is The Wicker Tree, which we will be screening at FantasyCon on the Friday evening, following a Q&A with Robin and screenwriter Stephen Volk. Neither a sequel nor a prequel, but inhabiting the same territory as the earlier film, it is based on the director’s novel, Cowboys for Christ.

Please note that Mark Gatiss and Robin Hardy will both be attending FantasyCon for a limited period only.

They join our Author Guests of Honour, legendary Texas "Mojo Story Writer" JOE R. LANSDALE (www.fantasycon2012.org/joelansdale.htm), broadcaster and novelist MURIEL GRAY (http://www.fantasycon2012.org/murielgray.htm) and New York Times best-selling fantasy author BRENT WEEKS (www.fantasycon2012.org/brentweeks.htm), Special Editor Guest MARY DANBY (www.fantasycon2012.org/marydanby.htm), and Master of Ceremonies TIM LEBBON (www.fantasycon2012.org/timlebbon.htm).

The British Fantasy Society has now announced its list of Nominees for this year’s British Fantasy Awards (www.fantasycon2012.org/nominees.htm), and you can book your place at the Awards Banquet on the Sunday afternoon (www.fantasycon2012.org/banquet.php). This gala event is always the highlight of the convention, but please be aware that places are strictly limited and that once the allocated number of banquet meals have been sold, then we will be unable to add any more.

Remember last week how all the critics who got to see The Hobbit footage in its glorious 48 fps said it looked less glorious and more like a BBC soap opera from the '70s?
