News / eBook-only deals screwing authors, may also hurt big publishing.
« on: October 15, 2012, 09:37:45 AM »
In the last year a number of major publishers have begun offering authors contracts for “e-originals” – books released originally – and exclusively – in e-book format. Though this is a logical step in the evolution of traditional publishing houses from tangible to virtual formats, the deflationary nature of its business model poses a serious threat to author earning power.

And as time goes by, the chances of it returning are looking less and less likely. That sucks, because Fringe is actually pretty great.

News / Has the DAREDEVIL Reboot Come to a Halt?
« on: April 17, 2012, 09:47:10 AM »
In what I consider to be a hugely disheartening couple of tweets, David Slade (the man Fox chose to helm their Daredevil reboot) has informed everyone that not only is the Daredevil reboot ways away from being made, but that the he seems to be lacking energy for the movie.

Press Releases / Bitter Seeds (new novel).
« on: November 30, 2011, 06:51:30 AM »
We’re delighted to welcome US author Ian Tregillis as a Zeno client. We’re representing Ian (who has been described by George R.R. Martin as ‘A major talent‘) in the UK, Commonwealth and translation markets on behalf of his head agent Kay McCauley at  Pimlico/Aureous Inc in NYC.

We’re equally delighted to announce in the same breath that UK/BC rights to Ian’s Milkweed Trilogy – comprising of BITTER SEEDS, THE COLDEST WAR and NECESSARY EVIL – have been acquired by Orbit in a deal negotiated by John Berlyne.

John says ‘This is a particularly sweet sale for me, as I read and absolutely loved BITTER SEEDS when Tor first published it in the US back in 2010, long before I had any professional dealings with the author. The mix of WWII action and comic book super-powers was something I found completely irresistible as a reader. To have the chance to handle these books outside the US is a real privilege and I’m thrilled that Orbit have picked them up and they will, I’m quite sure, do a wonderful job with them.’

Orbit Commissioning Editor Anna Gregson says ‘We’re delighted to have acquired this thrillingly sinister, clever and compelling tale that melds real-life events with occult forces and weird science. Its vivid atmosphere and supernatural twist make this a deeply mesmerising and entertaining novel, with great appeal for any fans of alternate histories, dark fantasy and superhero comics. Think Inglourious Basterds crossed with X-Men!‘.

BITTER SEEDS is scheduled for publication in December 2012, with the second and third titles following respectively in February and April2013.

An early and never-reprinted-before short story by the award-winning author of the Sandman series, Neil Gaiman, is among a brand new ebook collection of prose stories taken from the 2000 AD and Judge Dredd annuals and specials.

Featuring stories by New York Times best-sellers Gaiman and Dan Abnett, along with hit comics authors Mark Millar, Peter Milligan, Alan Grant and more, this amazing collection brings together nine thrilling short prose stories based in the world of Judge Dredd.

Following on from the launch of its collected ebook editions of creator interviews, 2000 AD is continuing its commitment to bringing more of 35 years of Thrill-power from its archives.

Never seen outside of those pages until now, this ebook presents these hard-to-find stories in one collection for the very first time.

The ‘annual’ is a British tradition – appearing in book shops and newsagents in the run-up to Christmas, every comic title had its own hard-backed book. Although 2000 AD is better known for its comic strips, text stories were a staple of these annuals until the mid-1990s.

The titular story, Sweet Justice, is one of Gaiman’s earliest published and least known short stories, featured in the 1988 Judge Dredd Annual – which went on sale just a year after his first comics work, a 2000 AD Future Shock strip, and the year before The Sandman would be published for the first time.

Now available on Amazon.co.uk and Amazon.com         Price: £2.88/$4.54

Press Releases / The Crimson Battle Axe (novel)

The Crimson Battle Axe by Dr. Curtis Oddo

--Features original cover art by the transcendent fantasy artists Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell

What do you do after you lose your job, your marriage and your money? If you’re Curtis Oddo the one thing you never do is lose hope. He stocked up on tuna, sold some of his sports cards collection to pay the bills, bought a computer and penned an amazing classic fantasy novel, topped off by enlisting the world famous fantasy artists Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell to paint the electrifying cover of the book.

Oddo’s debut novel The Crimson Battle Axe, is a sword-and-sorcery hero tale about justice versus vengeance, love versus apathy, forgiveness versus bitterness, and good versus evil.

“The goal of my book was to write a really fun, exciting, and intriguing story that people who were going through tough times could enjoy,” says Oddo. “And I wanted to explore poignant topics through characters I could identify with, characters with flaws, real emotions, real conflicts. The added bonus was having my cover art done by two of the most acclaimed fantasy artists working today.”

In The Crimson Battle Axe Oddo created a strange world of myth and magic – a medieval environment similar to earth - where fantastic races, powerful magic and the dark forces of evil abound - where one name is feared above all others: Gnarl, wielder of the Crimson Battle Axe. Gnarl fought against his enemies, the humans, who slaughtered and enslaved his race for over a century.  He, through destiny, meets the daughter of that enemy, Thelady, whom he promises to help should she ever be in need of his aid. When she requests that he defend the very people he hates the most, he puts aside his differences with the humans and other races in his world to succeed against the greatest evil his world has ever known, the Dark Lord Nobis.  As Gnarl faces death at every turn, the fate of the world rests upon his unusual relationship with this lovely young human female.

Throughout the story tough choices must be made by the main characters, as they must choose the right path while constantly challenged by doubts and dark forces working against them. Through fantastic battles and tender moments, with humor and unlikely friendship, they follow their destiny on an amazing quest.

“The Crimson Battle Axe is unique in that it’s not your typical modern fiction or dark fantasy, it has a more classical literature feel to it,” adds Oddo. “It’s full of fantastic battles, brave comrades-in-arms, beautiful heroines, exciting quests, and an exciting, climatic finish.

In reference to The Crimson Battle Axe artists Boris Vallejo and Julie Bell had this to say in their blog “Paint and Brush”: “The book is chock full of action and fantasy. The art was lots of fun to do and the book is lots of fun to read!”

Dr. Curtis Oddo, MD, is a primary care pediatrician for Providence Health Systems who has specialized in the area of child abuse. He plays guitar and writes his own music, is an avid reader of classical literature and has a passion for good movies (attending the Sundance Film Festival three times).  He lives in Oregon with his daughter, Tabalitha and son, David Oddo.   The Crimson Battle Axe is his first novel.
