Have you been to a convention recently? If you have, you'll no doubt see that Firefly cosplaying continues to be EVERYWHERE. So it should come as no surprise that there's a huge desire to play in that universe. Which is exactly where there's an MMO coming out. Or is there?

« on: December 14, 2012, 09:04:55 AM »
Amazon has announced the top 10 best-selling books of 2012 overall (print and Kindle combined), as well as the top 10 Kids & Teens books. “Fifty Shades Freed: Book Three of the Fifty Shades Trilogy” takes the top spot, and thriller “Gone Girl” comes in at number two; “The Mark of Athena (Heroes of Olympus, Book 3)” is the best-selling Kids & Teens book. These top 10 lists take into account first editions that were published in 2012, consider only paid units, and combine print and Kindle formats. To see these lists and all of Amazon’s top 100 best-selling print and Kindle books of 2012, go to www.amazon.com/bestsellingbooks2012.

“This was truly the year of the billionaire bad boy in romance—Amazon readers just couldn’t get enough of the genre,” said Sara Nelson, Editorial Director of Books and Kindle at Amazon.com. “While E. L. James published the first two books in her Fifty Shades trilogy in 2011, so they aren’t eligible for our 2012 list, the series really took off this year and propelled the third installment and the omnibus edition onto our top 10 list. It’s also interesting to note that four of the five contemporary romance titles in the top 10 list, including the Fifty Shades trilogy, were originally independently published and went on to become huge best sellers.”

The top 10 best-selling books overall are:

1. “Fifty Shades Freed: Book Three of the Fifty Shades Trilogy” by E. L. James

2. “Gone Girl: A Novel” by Gillian Flynn

3. “Fifty Shades Trilogy: Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker, Fifty Shades Freed 3-volume Boxed Set” by E. L. James

Though the Cold War was mostly a decades-long superpower standoff, there were a few hotter moments. There was the launching of Sputnik, the Cuban missile crisis, and the time the U.S. planned to detonate a nuke on the moon in hopes of scaring the Soviets into defeat. No, really.

Firstly, I should point out that author Kristine Kathryn Rusch is using ' diving' as the aquatic metaphor for examining derelict spacecraft. Considering we call space vehicles ' spaceships', seeing the vacuum of space as a sea shouldn't be that much of a surprise although it only really disguises the term extra-vehicular activity. Although Rusch's future period has no date, I do wonder if a 20th century metaphor would still be used in the future.

News / Hobbit collectibles on the way.
« on: June 06, 2012, 01:42:02 AM »
Warner Bros. Consumer Products and Weta Workshop announced today a partnership under which the design company will develop and market a range of prop replicas, collectibles and merchandise based on the upcoming films, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey and The Hobbit: There and Back Again, productions of New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The licensing agreement grants Weta access to the library of characters, settings, and stories for the two films. The first products in the collection will be unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con at the Weta booth (#3513B) in July 2012, along with a limited number of exclusive pieces that will be available for purchase.

“Weta’s role behind-the-scenes of these two films makes them uniquely qualified to recreate the richly imaginative world of Middle-earth that their workshop helped brought to life,” said Kelly Gilmore, senior vice president, Global Toys and Themed Entertainment, Warner Bros. Consumer Products. “This story will transport audiences to extraordinary new places and we are thrilled to bring fans products that capture the artistry and spirit of these beloved properties.”

The Weta Workshop collection will be inspired by the scenery, characters and adventures Bilbo Baggins encounters on his journey in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey from filmmaker Peter Jackson, slated for release December 14, 2012. Fans and collectors will appreciate the craftsmanship behind each element of the collection, which will include collectible statues, dioramas, jewelry and art prints.

"We are excited to be returning to Middle-earth,” said Weta Workshop's Academy Award-winning Creative Director, Richard Taylor. “We have been working with Peter Jackson and the product team on the design and production of the movies for the last four years, and we now get the chance to share our passion with fans and collectors. Our authentic prop replicas and collectibles are created by the very same artists who have worked on the two films, so effectively they come straight from Middle-earth."
