News / Avoid @fiverr - new bug: taking money, no service.
« on: July 01, 2013, 07:16:42 AM »
Heads-up to anyone buying or selling on Fiverr at the moment. They're taking your money, but a bug in their new-look site means orders are not being created after they've got your $ from Paypal, orders just vanish - looks like data is being passed blank between Paypal/Fiverr. Sellers are reporting no customers and Buyers are reporting vaporized orders.

« on: March 29, 2013, 02:48:22 PM » today announced that it has reached an agreement to acquire Goodreads, a leading site for readers and book recommendations that helps people find and share books they love.

“Amazon and Goodreads share a passion for reinventing reading,” said Russ Grandinetti, Amazon Vice President, Kindle Content. “Goodreads has helped change how we discover and discuss books and, with Kindle, Amazon has helped expand reading around the world. News / Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special has found its companion!
« on: February 07, 2013, 10:33:20 AM »
With Harry Potter and Game of Thrones actor David Bradley on board as William Hartnell (the first Doctor), it was only a matter of time before we heard about the actress playing the actress who played his very first companion: his granddaughter Susan.

For the past five years Hermes Press has been producing archival reprints of the original Buck Rogers daily and Sunday comic strips; now the company will be offering an all new take on this classic series helmed by comic book artist and writer Howard Chaykin.

To celebrate his new Buck Rogers series Chaykin will premiere this new version of the feature with a poster designed especially for Comic-Con which will be given away only at the panel, "Buck Rogers, Past, Present, and Future" on Friday, July 13, from 6:00-7:00 PM in room 4. The full color poster, featuring Buck Rogers and Wilma Deering is a Comic-Con panel exclusive.

Chaykin's new series will take the feature back to its origins and have the look and feel of the "classic" Buck Rogers. Hermes Press publisher Dan Herman believes that the strength of the original newspaper strip is "its great sci-fi tales, characters, and its vision of the future -- it's a great tradition to draw on and this new series will pay homage to the classic version of the newspaper strip."

Chaykin feels that Buck Rogers is one of the great science-fiction features and is completely revved up about creating a new version of the feature. "When Dan casually asked me whether I had any interest in reviving BUCK ROGERS, my reaction was first physical--genuine goose bumps--followed by complete delight at the thought of paying back a concept that was so utterly seminal in my thinking about our medium and our field.

Fantasy Con is pleased to announce author, broadcaster and columnist Muriel Gray as our third Author Guest of Honour. Best remembered as co-presenter of Channel 4’s seminal early 1980s music programme The Tube, alongside Jools Holland and Paula Yates, she began her writing career in 1995 with the best-selling horror novel The Trickster (shortlisted for the British Fantasy Award). It was followed by two more, Furnace (1996) and The Ancient (2000), which Stephen King described as "scary and unputdownable".

She has also contributed many short stories to anthologies and magazines, written for comics, and produced columns for Time Out, the Sunday Correspondent, the Sunday Mirror, Bliss magazine and the Sunday Herald. In 2001 she won Columnist of the Year in the Scottish Press Awards.

Muriel joins our other Author Guests of Honour, legendary Texas "Mojo Story Writer" JOE R. LANSDALE and New York Times best-selling fantasy author BRENT WEEKS, Special Editor Guest MARY DANBY, and Master of Ceremonies TIM LEBBON. The British Fantasy Society has recently announced its list of Nominees for this year’s British Fantasy Awards, and you can now book your place at the Awards Banquet on the Sunday afternoon. Thanks for the tip-off, Sir Tibbs. I love his books and shall duly grab both of them for my library. Can I post a review in the forum after I have read them?

News / The Assault (movie review).
« on: May 15, 2012, 12:06:38 AM »
French filmmaker Julien Leclercq’s intense-driven thriller The Assault recalls the horrific 1994 hijacking of Air France Flight 8969 at the hasty hands of four Islamic terrorists. The Paris-bound plane was to depart Algiers as the diabolical hijackers had other perverse plans in mind—mainly to crash the plane into France’s world famous symbolic architectural structure The Eiffel Tower.

News / Stargate: Universe: First Season (review).
« on: May 14, 2012, 10:26:56 AM »
When ‘Stargate: Universe’ was going into production, I couldn’t help but see parallels to ‘Babylon 5’s ‘Crusade’ in having a rogue scientist on-board a starship stepping away from the continuity of the mother series. The only difference is this one managed to survive to two seasons before getting the chop.

So what is George Lucas going to do with his property now that he's tired of his rich neighbors putting up a not-in-my-backyard stink? He wants to transform the property into low-income housing, naturally.
