Lakes Festival Celebrates 50 years of Doctor Who in Comics
Kendal, UK, 23rd April 2014: Grab your sonic screwdriver and set the time-space co-ordinates on your TARDIS' for Kendal, 17th October 2014!  The Lakes International Comic Art Festival is pleased to announce a number of events to celebrate 50 years of Doctor Who in comics, the world's longest-running science fiction TV-inspired tie-in strip.
Doctor Who fans celebrated 50 years of the Doctor Who TV show last year, but some may not know that the first comic strip based on the show was published one year after the series launch, in TV Comic. Since then, Doctor Who has featured in numerous comic titles including Countdown, Doctor Who Magazine and Doctor Who Adventures in the UK. IDW were the first US publisher to produce a regular Doctor Who title, as well as several limited series – a license recently picked up by Britain’s very own Titan Comics, out from July onwards.
Lined up for this year’s Lakes Festival are Dez Skinn, the talented editor and publisher who brought Doctor Who Weekly to life back in 1979, the precursor to today’s Doctor Who Magazine. Dez will be on hand to talk about both the origins of the Weekly and his many other comic creations, including the acclaimed anthology comic, Warrior.
Marking 50 years of Doctor Who in comics, the festival will also deliver a special panel – Fifty Years of Doctor Who comics in 50 Minutes – featuring Doctor Who artists Mike Collins and Martin Geraghty and writers Scott Gray, Nick Abadzis and Robbie Morrison. Former Doctor Who Magazine editor John Freeman will host the panel.
Also at the Festival are a number of creators who’ve had their own dealings with the world’s favourite time traveller, including Dave Gibbons (who drew the first Doctor Who Weekly main strips), IDW Doctor Who artists Mark Buckingham and Gary Erskine and cartoonist Kev F Sutherland, who created several cartoons for DWM during John’s tenure.
These Doctor Who-connected guests are the latest addition to a guest list that includes a range of British and overseas creators including The Walking Dead artist Charlie Adlard, 2000AD artist Jock, self-taught Japanese artist Junko Mzuno, digital comics frontiersman Scott McCloud, leading US comics writer Gail Simone, the creator of the multi-award winning Bone Jeff Smith, Dutch underground comics artist Joost Swarte and Emma Vieceli will also join many other comic creators for Kendal’s second comics extravaganza.
The full line up of guests is due to be announced this coming Friday – 25th April – when tickets go on sale. (For further information on announced guests so far, visit the Festival's web site).
The Lakes International Comic Art Festival (17th – 19th October 2014) is a new kind of comic art event in the UK. Modelled on a European-style festival it aims to take over the market town of Kendal, on the edge of the Lake District, with comic art presenting the widest range of genres. Events include a 24 Hour Comic Marathon, children’s comic workshops, talks, signings, Great War in Comics art exhibition and a Comics Fair.

• Tickets for the Lakes International Comic Art Festival go on sale from 25th April 2014. Sign up for the Festival's newsletter here for the latest news! Web:

Press Releases / Apex Magazine Submission Guidelines Changes June 2014
« on: April 22, 2014, 12:47:37 PM »
Apex Magazine Submission Guidelines Changes

Apex Publications is pleased to announce changes to the Apex Magazine submission guidelines. These changes include upping our word limit for short fiction, increasing the pay rate, and new guidelines for poetry submissions.

For many years our submission guidelines have stated that we have a firm 5,000 word limit on short fiction submissions. Recently we decided to bump that up to 7,500 words, giving our authors more room to tell their tales and bringing our readers some longer pieces of fiction.

Also, in accordance with SFWA’s new pro-rate requirements, we will be paying 6 cents a word for all original short fiction beginning July 1st.

Finally, we have set a 200 line limit on all poetry submissions, and all poetry must be original and unpublished.

The editors and publisher of Apex Magazine are dedicated to continuing our mission to bring our readers outstanding short fiction and poetry from the science fiction, fantasy, and horror genres, and we believe that these changes to our guidelines are an important step in that direction.

The Apex Magazine submission guidelines may be read in their entirety here:

APEX PUBLICATIONS ( is a small press dedicated to publishing exemplary works of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. Owned and operated by Jason B. Sizemore, Apex publishes the thrice Hugo Award-nominated Apex Magazine. The Apex catalog contains books by genre luminaries such as Tom Piccirilli, Catherynne M. Valente, and Lavie Tidhar.

Nearly 30 years ago, Dark Horse arrived with an agenda different from that of any other publisher in comics. Join Dark Horse PR director Jeremy Atkins, along with Greg Rucka (Veil), Adam Warren (Empowered), Matt Kindt (MIND MGMT), Michael Avon Oeming (The Victories), Jai Nitz (Dream Thief), Frank Barbiere (The White Suits), and Bryan J. L. Glass (Furious) for a look at some of this year’s most exciting original works!

MILWAUKIE, OR, MARCH 13—As the pop culture world gears up for Seattle’s Emerald City Comicon, Dark Horse announces not one, not two, not even three, but four variant covers for this year’s show!

The first few months of 2014 will see some of Dark Horse’s biggest launches of the year, and we have chosen to celebrate with Emerald City variants for Serenity #1, Buffy #1, Veil #1, and a very special variant of Witcher #1.

First up is Veil, the much-talked-about new, original series by Greg Rucka and Toni Fejzula. For this year’s show, Dark Horse has tapped J. H. Williams III to create the variant cover. Limited to 500 copies, Veil #1 is sure to go quickly, especially with writer Greg Rucka in attendance!

Next, we have the hotly anticipated Season 10 premiere of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, with a variant cover by Season 9 cover artist Phil Noto, limited to 1,000 copies. Look for interior artist Rebekah Isaacs at this year’s show!

Another one for Joss Whedon fans: Dark Horse brings Jenny Frison on for a special cover of Serenity: Leaves on the Wind #1, featuring none other than the lovely Inara! A few lucky fans may even get actress Morena Baccarin herself to sign their copies!

Last, and certainly not least, legendary artist Stan Sakai has done a special cover of the upcoming tie-in series The Witcher, a canonical entry in the world of the Witcher video games, which have collectively won over 250 awards and sold more than 5.5 million copies worldwide! All proceeds from the sale of this limited edition variant will benefit Stan and Sharon Sakai. Stan will be attending the show, in celebration of the thirtieth anniversary of his landmark series, Usagi Yojimbo!

Each variant-cover issue will cost five dollars and will be limited to ten copies per person, per day! A set quantity will be available at the show opening each day.

Hope to see you at this year’s Emerald City Comicon in Seattle, WA, on March 28–30!

‘…a collection as rich and varied as the true history of this great British city."
— Gareth L. Powell

Airship Shape & Bristol Fashion brings together tales from the light and dark sides of steampunk. Living ghosts, walking ferns and ingenious androids populate visions of the city of Bristol at once familiar and peculiar. Above them soar magnificent men, and women, in their flying machines. Whether they are seeking release, revenge or adventure, the characters in these stories will draw you down the side-streets of Bristol to the brass and steam-filled worlds you never dreamed were there.

This book is produced in collaboration with the BristolCon Foundation, a charitable organisation responsible for the running of the BristolCon SF & Fantasy convention, which takes place in Bristol every October, and a series of Fringe Events intended to promote local genre writers and artists. Airship Shape & Bristol Fashion is the Foundation’s first short-story anthology supporting this mission.
