Conventions and events / CINE-EXCESS X 2016 Competition
« on: November 06, 2016, 04:25:33 AM »
CINE-EXCESS X finds the international film festival and conference dedicated to cult films and horror celebrating its 10th anniversary in the city of Birmingham and extending its fiendish claws to partner with The Birmingham Comics Festival (BCF) by adding a graphic narrative competition to this year’s proceedings that take place between the 10th and 12th November.

While leading scholars, critics and film makers will contribute to a series of talks, panel discussions, interviews and UK theatrical premieres/exclusive screenings hosted by Birmingham City University (BCU) and the Mockingbird Cinema, Cine-Excess X has also launched a series of unique competitions going under the Tales of Terror banner to showcase new talents in the creative mediums.

This weekend aspiring filmmakers will receive a mystery box and have just 48 hours to come up with short film of up to five minutes long using the contents within said box, while students across the West Midlands have already received an envelope with a series of images from which they are creating scary stories and abhorrent artwork that will be displayed at BCU as part of Cine-Excess X festival, in its aforementioned link with BCF.

Now the Tales of Terror comic book challenge is being extended to all budding writers and artists residing throughout the United Kingdom…

Comic book creators you have just one week to come up with an original comic strip of up to five pages long with the only creative criteria being that the work produced is terrifying and goose bump inducing!

Competition Rules

·    All entries must be new original comic strips (Copyright will remain with the creators).

·    Completed entries must be emailed by 12th November in .jpeg format to: [email protected]

·    List all those credited in the making of the strip and give one contact person’s full name and UK postal address, along with your email address.

 Competition Prizes

The winners of the West Midlands Tales of Terror Comic Challenge will be announced during the Cine-Excess X festival weekend, while those of the national competition will be announced shortly after.

Prizes will include both a statue The Walking Dead and graphic novel kindly donated by Nostalgia & Comics, over £125 worth of graphic novels and comics (including signed books by independent publishers Accent UK and Time Bomb), plus free passes to attend the next Birmingham Comics Festival that will be taking place in June 2017!

Museum of Science Fiction to Hold Deep Ocean Research and Robotics Competition 2016

Washington, DC (Oct. 25, 2016) – The Museum of Science Fiction, the world’s first comprehensive science fiction museum, is announcing a Deep Ocean Research and Robotics educational competition open to high school students around the world. The winning proposals will be funded, built, and launched, with data collected from the mission being shared with schools and research organizations for analysis.

"Teams will have to make an academically rigorous proposal that addresses everything from the technical details of their submersible robots to the parameters of its research mission and criteria for success," said Liz Taylor president of DOER Marine and a member of the jury committee. "Winning teams will be selected using a number of factors, but innovation will be a major consideration, so we hope to see some new designs from our young future scientists and engineers." Registration for the competition opens on November 1, 2016, and teams have until March 15, 2017 to submit their proposals. Winners will be announced on or about May 15, 2017 with an awards ceremony at the Museum's Escape Velocity conference at the
Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC on September 2, 2017.

"Deep sea exploration share many things in common with space exploration," said Mason Peck, Associate Professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Cornell University and member of the Museum of Science Fiction's Board of Advisors. "In fact, astronauts train in water to simulate the zero-gravity environment of space. Competition participants will need to overcome many of the same technical challenges with deep ocean submersibles that also apply to satellite systems operating in space."

After a very successful subscription drive last November, 2016 has been an absolutely amazing year for Apex Magazine. Looking to 2017, we want build on this year’s success and make it even more spectacular!

To do this we’ve set this year’s Apex Magazine subscription drive goal at $10,000.

By hitting this goal we would be able to go from 12,000 words of original fiction to 16,000 words in each issue. We could also raise the rate that we pay for original fiction and for cover art.

We feel this goal is well within reach, but not without the support of our readers and fans. As an added incentive, we’ve set up rewards that will unlock additional content for the January, 2017 issue of Apex Magazine, creating a double issue as a thank you to all of our supporters.

We already have an impressive lineup of original fiction scheduled for January. Stories by James Beamon, Lia Swope Mitchell, Iori Kusano, and J.J. Litke. The issue will feature two poems, a reprint, and interviews with an Apex author and our cover artist. Our cover artist for January will be Aaron Nakahara.

As we reach goals in our subscription drive we will add the following to the January issue, as well as a couple of rewards that will continue in every issue all year long:

* $500 – a third original poem will be selected by our poetry editor Bianca Spriggs

* $1,000 – a second reprint will be added to the issue

* $6,500 – an interview with E. Catherine Tobler about her circus universe

* $7,000 – we will add an additional 2,000 words to each issue of Apex Magazine in 2017, bringing the total up to 14,000 words per issue.

* $7,500 – increase pay rate for original fiction to 7 cents a word

* $8,000 – a new story by E. Catherine Tobler set in her circus universe

* $8,500 – increase cover artist rate to $100

Kendal 10th October 2016: Ahead of Kendal's Lakes International Comic Art Festival this weekend (14th - 16th October), some of the event's Exhibitions are open, with others to follow on 12th October.

Beatrix Potter Reimagined, which runs until 28th October 2016 is open now at Kendal Library, as are Making a Scene at the Brewery Arts Centre featuring the work of world renowned artist Ken Niimura (who designed this year's Festival poster and is a guest), and Young, Talented And Beautiful - Five Rising Stars from Japan. The latter features work handpicked for their distinctive voices by Ken Niimura, five rising stars from Japan bring their artwork to the UK for the first time - Est Em, Takehito Moriizumi, Tsuchika Nishimura, Keigo Shinzo and Miki Yamamoto.

Opening at the Wildman Gallery on Wednesday is Silence / Hiljaisuus, an exhibition of original graphic novel art by Hanneriina Moisseinen from Finland, which runs until 12th November 2016; and  Five Bridges: Stories of the Flood, an exhibition at Kendal Museum featuring art by Mike Medaglia, Lisa Woynarski and Farokh Soltani.

Beyond Kendal, Phono+Graphic, an exhibition of vinyl record covers designed by leading comic strip artists curated by comic-book supremo and Festival patron Sean Phillips, runs at the Vallum Gallery, University of Cumbria Institute of the Arts, Brampton Road, Carlisle until 17th November, opening on Thursday 13th October.

Five Bridges: Stories of the Flood

Five Bridges: Stories of the Flood is a unique comics exhibition where the human stories of flooding are depicted through comics and brought to life in a dynamic audio performance.

"Five Bridges represents an exciting experiment that merges comic art with oral storytelling," Mike Medaglia explains. "It came out of a desire to tell the human stories behind the devastating flooding in Cumbria in 2015. We spoke to a number of local people to gather their different experiences and view points in hopes of connecting this event to larger environmental contexts."

Featuring five different stories of people who experienced the flooding, it tells the human stories behind the flooding of the River Kent which devastated parts of Kendal. Highlighting the wider picture of the interrelatedness of all human/nature relationships, these stories provide a human experience to the often abstract and complex issue of climate change. After experiencing the stories from the flood, audience members will have a chance to contribute their own responses, drawing a self-portrait and telling their own stories, adding to and growing the exhibition.

"We are pleased with how the exhibition came together and are looking forward to responses from the people of Kendal," Mike continues. "More than that, though, we are excited to see how Five Bridges will grow as people add their own stories of flooding, expanding and enriching our understanding of the impact of this event."

Sponsored by local business Atlantis Kitchens, the exhibition has five stations where visitors put on headphones and are guided through the five different accounts of the floods, moving between panels as the interviews progress.

"The five stories are from a range of people living in Kendal, of different age groups and professions, so each give a unique angle on the experience of flooding," says Mike. "Then, after viewing the exhibition, attendees are encouraged to draw a little portrait and write their own experience of flooding or extreme weather connected to climate change.

"Through this the exhibition will grow and evolve while it is on. In the room there will be an atmospheric soundtrack playing of wind, rain and water; while around the room there will be bits of art marking the history of flooding in Kendal."

One of the stories comes from the perspective of Graham Standring, an area ranger with the Lake District National Park, who has been actively involved in the flood recovery work across the park. “Through Five Bridges, people will be able to hear how the floods affected communities in the National Park and how we’re beginning to repair our footpaths and bridges that are used by millions of people every year. We’ve been working hard to ensure the majority of the park was open and accessible ahead of the summer, but there’s still repair work to be done.

"One thing remains unchanged though - you will always find a warm welcome in the Lake District.”

Beyond Kendal's exhibition venues, Kendal is of course already awash with comics-inspired art, displayed in many local businesses windows as part if the Windows on Comic Art Trail which features work by comic artists from across the globe, local school children and community groups.

The Weekend Starts Here!

The Festival weekend launches from 1.00pm on Friday for early arrivers, when Knockabout Comics open their "Malt Room of Mischief" at the Brewry Arts Centre. In the evening, a battle royal is on the cards as comic creators argue the case for their favourite of two cartoon greats - Asterix or Tintin?

This launch event in partnership with Lancaster University will include contributions key comic artists, celebrities and others, including TV chat show host Jonathan Ross, comedians Alan Carr and Jack Whitehall and Strictly Come Dancing judge Darcy Bussell! The night will also feature the announcement of the new Comics Laureate, taking over from Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons, who has been busy recently working on a terrific new range of graphic novels for children with Oxford University Press.

COMICS INDUSTRY UNITES WITH LOVE IS LOVE BENEFIT BOOK IN SUPPORT OF ORLANDO TRAGEDY

San Diego, CA (September 21, 2016) – IDW Publishing, with the support of DC Entertainment, will honor the victims of Orlando’s Pulse Nightclub tragedy by publishing LOVE IS LOVE, an anthology graphic novel curated by writer Marc Andreyko (BATWOMAN, WONDER WOMAN ’77). In the wake of this devastating event, Andreyko assembled a group of fellow comic book creators to contribute to the benefit project. Andreyko received an overwhelming response across the comic book community and beyond, with over 200 writers and artists lending their talents to LOVE IS LOVE, a collection of over 100 short graphic stories. All material has been donated by the writers, artists, and editors, with all proceeds going to victims, survivors, and their families via EQUALITY FLORIDA.

LOVE IS LOVE will debut in comic book shops and bookstores this December. The anthology graphic novel is a 144-page love letter to the LGBTQ community containing moving and heartfelt stories—some using iconic DC characters—from some of the greatest talent in comics, including Phil Jimenez, Steve Sadowski, Paul Jenkins, Mike Carey, Matt Wagner, Marguerite Bennett, Aneke, Damon Lindelof, Patton Oswalt, Steven Orlando, Rafael Albuquerque, Jason Aaron, Jason Latour, James Asmus, Ming Doyle, James Tynion IV, Cecil Castellucci, Brandon Peterson, Jesus Saiz, Olivier Coipel, Leinil Yu, Elsa Charretier, and many more to be announced.

“When tragedy happens, art responds. And after the Pulse massacre, the comics community responded quickly, decisively, and with open hearts,” said project organizer and writer Andreyko. “I could not be more proud of this book, or to be a member of the comics community. The talent and emotion on every page is staggering. LOVE IS LOVE mourns the 49 lost, honors the survivors, and celebrates love in all forms.”

“When Marc brought this project to me, there was no hesitation about us getting involved,” said IDW Chief Creative Officer Chris Ryall. “To echo Marc’s sentiments, we are proud of the hard work and talent that has gone into this project and to be involved in any way to support the survivors and their families in the face of tragedy.”

“We’re deeply thankful to all the participants who donated their work to LOVE IS LOVE,” said Sarah Gaydos, Group Editor for IDW Publishing. “The outpouring of emotion from their work honors the LGBTQ community, and helps express the grief we’re all feeling.”

“Marc's heartfelt passion for this cause and this project has inspired everyone involved in LOVE IS LOVE,” explains Jamie Rich, Group Editor of DC’s Vertigo imprint. “As an editor on the book, I continue to be moved every day by the expressions of hope and love the contributors have put forth, and can only imagine the profound impact the book will have on readers, as well.”

The contributors behind LOVE IS LOVE have banded together to send a powerful message through their art that they stand with the victims of this national tragedy. Help spread the love this December and become part of this historic comics event.

Kendal 20th September 2016: The Lakes International Comic Art Festival is delighted to announce this year' special 24 Hour Marathon Comic project featuring a stellar line up of talent, which aims to raise awareness of the medical condition OCD - Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Written by Alex Paknadel and Dan Watters, the artists are Dan Berry (editor), Craig Thompson, Charlie Adlard, Emma Vieceli, Petteri Tikannen, Bruce Mutard, Nick Brokenshire, Bryan Talbot, Ken Niimura, Joe Decie, Mike Medaglia and Jake Phillips, offering an exciting mix of styles of art for this challenging charity project.

Between them, they'll produce the comic on 13-14th October during the Festival weekend in Kendal. It will be printed by 3.00pm on the 15th and launched in the Comic Clock Tower where charity OCD Action will also be based.

All profits from the sale of this special comic will go to OCD Action alongside a percentage from other merchandise.

“I’m excited to participate in the OCD Comic," says US guest Craig Thompson, creator of the award-winning graphic novel Blankets, "because it sidesteps the sleep deprivation and isolation of the 24 hour comic, for something social and collaborative and much more energetically manageable — a sprint and passing of the baton, rather than a grueling, joint-destroying marathon. I'm very much looking forward to it!”

"As a notion in itself the collaborative process of this project excited me, so I said yes; absolutely," says Festival patron Emma Vieceli of this daunting marathon draw and concept, whose work includes the critically acclaimed independent web series, BREAKS created with Malin Ryden.

"Having now seen the amazing list of co-creators, I'm double-excited about it."

"This will be the first 24 hour comic I've ever contributed to," says award-wining artist Bryan Talbot, creator of the Luther Arkrwright and Grandville graphic novel sagas. "Two pages in two hours? I must be mad!"

"People always say how fast I am," enthuses Walking Dead artist Charlie Adlard of the challenge. "Well, this is where I prove them right. The race is on!"

"I am very excited by the challenge of having to produce pages in such a short space of time!" says Nick Brokenshire, the artist on IDW's Amelia Cole fantasy series. "And for a great cause - Fun!"

"'This project is so important and I am very happy to be involved," says Mike Medaglia, whose critically-acclaimed work will also feature in the "Five Bridges" exhibition at the Festival.

"Comics have a unique way of engaging new readers and re-engaging past readers with important subjects," he continues. "They can bring information on a range of subjects to readers who don't normally read up on such topics, and perhaps they even find information to help them in their lives. Then, for readers who do read on specific topics regularly, like OCD, comics is a new way for them to approach the subject.

"I think the depth that comics can reach in terms of having a positive effect on people's lives is yet to even begin to be discovered. This project is certainly a big step in that direction."

The Lakes International Comic Art Festival is proud to be supporting the work of OCD Action. As the UK’s largest and most comprehensive OCD charity, OCD Action is able to provide accurate and up-to-date information on OCD and related conditions. The charity runs a helpline, advocacy service, support group network and forum to help people with the disorder, and also works to raise awareness in the media and campaigns to improve access to quality treatment for OCD.

The Charity also has access to a wide range of case studies from individuals willing to share their own story about struggling with OCD.

“We’re thrilled and honoured to be given the opportunity of working with this amazing festival," says Charlie Loveday, Lead Fundraiser of OCD Action.

"OCD is an often invisible condition that affects two per cent of the population," he notes. "Many people in the comics community will have the disorder themselves. There are likely to be attendees of this festival itself who are living with the condition, either too afraid to seek help or unaware that the distressing thoughts and compulsions they are subject to have an explanation. So we hope that our presence at this Festival, and the comic being produced on OCD, will help these people realise that OCD is a treatable condition and that the help is out there.”

Kendal 15th September 2016: The Lakes International Comic Art Festival has revealed its full Exhibitions plans around this year's three day-long weekend (14th - 16th October) in Kendal, alongside its ever-popular Fringe events, which include Guardian political cartoonist Martin Rowson creating a mural right outside local MP and Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron's offices!
Of special interest to locals - and anyone affected by last year's winter floods across the UK - will be "Five Bridges: Stories of the Flood", an exhibition featuring art by Mike Medaglia, Lisa Woynarski and Farokh Soltani. Sponsored by local business Atlantis Kitchens, this is a unique comics exhibition where the human stories of flooding are depicted through comics and brought to life in a dynamic audio performance.

In the works for this year's Festival - now in its fourth year - are a wide range of events at the Shakespeare Centre, offering a “Discovery Zone” of comic creators from around the globe, including Australia's Gregory Mackay (Anders and the Comet, Anders and the Volcano; Francis Bear), Bruce Mutard (The Sacrifice, The Silence, A Mind of Love), Tim McEwen, Laura Renfrew and Stuart Medley; guests from Finland, third largest comic reading nation per capita in the world; and the opportunity to find out more  about the Cintiq tablet from Festival sponsors WACOM, technology used by many comic artists.

On Sunday, there will be the chance to meet Dr Ian Williams, Paula Knight and Mike Medaglia from Jessica Kingsley Publisher/ Singing Dragon and Myriad Editions, to find out more about the current explosion of comics about medicine and health related issues. Graphic Medicine explores the frontier between the medium of comics and healthcare, through autobiographical, fictional, and educational works: an area of study, a community, a movement for change.

Veteran comic creator Gilbert Shelton (creator of the Furry Freak Brothers and Fat Freddy's Cat) and Hunt Emerson (creator of Calculus Cat) are just two creators who will be involved in comics skulduggery in the Brewery Arts Centre-based "Malt Room of Mischief", co-ordinated by long time Festival supporters Knockabout Comics. Look out for Fez Tai Chi classes, cabaret, art exhibitions and more as part of this extraordinary concoction of comic delights!

Comic artist Joe Decie, who delighted Festival visitors with the weekend-long creation of his incredible wall mural outside Ruskins bar on Kendal's high street last year, is back in October, this time transferring his skills to the walls of Morrisons supermarket! As usual, we have no idea what he's planning - but we're sure it will delight shoppers.

Talking of Ruskins, the popular bar will be given over to a tribute to the works of comic writer Mark Millar - whose works include Kick-Ass, Secret Service, Jupiter’s Legacy, Ultimate X-Men and, more recently, MPH, Huck and Empress... and talking of the latter, be sure to look out for this year's Festival beer of the same name, the work of local brewery Bowness Beer, sporting a label designed by one of last year's guest, Stuart Immonen.

Withe the town brought to life with comics in the windows of many local shops thanks to the annual Windows Trail, a special cartoon installation inspired by  the work of Carol Hanson as part of the Dementia and Imagination Programme, there's no shortage of things to see for free around town. (Donations welcome).

Festival Exhibitions

In addition to "Five Bridges", Festival goers will have the chance to get inside the head of internationally-acclaimed comic artist Ken Niimura, with his exhibition at the Brewery titled "Making a Scene". Ken was winner of the Golden Prize in the 5th International Manga Award and was nominated for both Eisner and Eagle Awards for his work on I Kill Giants, created in collaboration with fellow guest Joe Kelly. His illustration book Zero reveals both a rare and diverse talent, while Travelling and Henshin, both short story collections, display that intoxicating combination of fine art and strong storyline.

Ken, who designed this year's Festival poster, has also curated "Young, Talented And Beautiful - Five Rising Stars from Japan" presenting work by Est Em, Takehito Moriizumi, Tsuchika Nishimura, Keigo Shinzo and Miki Yamamoto - some of the most acclaimed an interesting authors of the new generation of manga artists, sharing a common interest in depicting the daily life in nowadays Japan through a combination of unique art and a very personal narrative.
An exhibition featuring the work of Finnish artist Hanneriina Moisseinen, just one of the great guests from Finland this year is also taking place and, beyond Kendal, we're delighted that the Vallum Gallery at the University of Cumbria Institute of the Arts, Brampton Road, Carlisle will be offering another chance to see the "Phono+Graphic" exhibition curated by Festival patron and top artist Sean Phillips.

The town will be entirely given over to comics, with business owners lining up to support the Festival's famous "Windows Trail", providing store front space to display comics art created by artists and local groups and school children.

While panel events and film screenings are ticketed, the Comics Clock Tower offers plenty of free access to many comic creators and their work, and there's an exciting line up of free events lined up for children, too, in assorted venues across Kendal.

"Having learned lots of great lessons from our growing audiences and previous international guests, I think we have one of our best programmes yet," enthuses Festival Director Julie Tait, "It aims to feed the hunger of comic art fans whilst also appealing to those new to it all or, at least, new to a comic art festival of this kind.

"We have some of the most exciting and inspiring artists and writers working in comics, film, animation and gaming from across the globe all descending on what we think is one of the most beautiful towns in the world."

The October weekend is just one of a number of comics projects from the Festival, which has included the world premiere performance of Black Dog – the Dreams of Paul Nash by Dave McKean that took place in May and will return to Kendal for the Festival.
