Well, as we near the landmark tenth issue of Dark Horse’s flagship anthology, we are offering one very lucky comic shop the chance to host the official Dark Horse Presents #10 release party!

Caretaker Who?

a quick summation by: Geoff Willmetts

The Doctor likes returning favours, especially after landing on the Earth in a spacesuit as he scuttles a spaceship in 1938. With the helmet on back to front, a helpful neighbour, Madge Arwell, gets him to a convenient police call box.

Three years later, Madge Arwell’s husband is a pilot in WW2 and whose plane crashes in the channel on the way home. Madge and her children, Cyril and Lily, are evacuated to an old house and the Caretaker who looks suspiciously like a certain Time Lord but acts more like Mary Poppins gives them a time to remember, except Cyril walks through a time portal to a winter forest in 5345 where the wood comes to life. It ain’t Narnia despite the story title, ‘The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe’.

The Caretaker and Lily chase after Cyril and discover he’s been taken over by royalty. Madge follows later and runs into the people who are going to acid rain on the forest as the wood is fuel. There is something sentient in the forest and it needs aid to survive and it hasn’t had any cuprinol.

Any more and you’ll miss the point of the story. In many respects, the Doctor ends up being the guiding force than the actual solver of the problem spoiler of the story but the story is really about the family than him this time.

This is typical fare for ‘Doctor Who’ at yuletide although judging by the paring down of cast, definitely a show of budget control. Not that this doesn’t stop this story being interesting, just a reminder to the Beeb that as the show is its flagstone and makes masses from merchandise that they need to be reminded to invest at the rate of inflation. As earlier Doctor, Tom Baker says in an audio commentary in a DVD I’m reviewing for next deadline, there is nothing that is ever a competition for ‘Doctor Who’.

I do think it’s a bit too soon for the Doctor to reveal his presence again as it would have been interesting to see how he copes by being incognito for the two years after the autumn finale. Then again, this story could be in the future and we might see that in the past later.

Let’s hope the viewing figures are high for what is otherwise a dreary Christmas Day television day.

December 22, MILWAUKIE, OR—Dark Horse Comics announces the return of Nexus in Dark Horse Presents #12.

The fan-favorite title returns with its team of creators, Mike Baron (The Badger) and Steve Rude (The Moth), in their respective positions of writer and artist! Baron and Rude created Nexus in 1981 and have been continuing their canonical tale for thirty years. The Eisner Award winners will craft a brand-new three-part story for readers eager to quench their thirst for what’s next to come in the Nexusverse.

“The new stories crush anvils,” says Mike Baron.

“Nexus has never been a stranger to different publishers. Last seen under the Rude Dude banner in 2009, Nexus has stayed in limbo, never quite knowing when to return, or if he ever would return. Things come together in strange ways. With the backing of Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Comics, Nexus will return to comics,” Steve Rude said. “We especially look forward to the response of Nexus’s devoted fans, and thank them for the wonderful support and encouragement they’ve given us since the book’s debut in 1981!”

Dark Horse Presents #12 is on sale May 2012.

January 27-29, 2012
(Los Angeles, CA) December 19, 2011- Film and television composer Daniel Licht will receive Composer of the Year at the Third Annual Russian Horror Film Awards on January 28, 2012 in Moscow. Supported by the Russian Ministry of Culture and the Russian Cinematography Union, this event honors both native and foreign films, actors, directors, and composers within the horror genre. Past honorees include Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street) and Jeffrey Combs (The Re-Animator). Daniel Licht will be honored with Composer of the Year for his repertoire within the horror genre, which includes Thinner, Children of the Corn, Dexter and the upcoming videogame Silent Hill: Downpour score.
Daniel Licht’s scoring approach has solidified him as one of a kind. Licht’s eccentric techniques create an anxious and fearful environment for his most notable work, Emmy Award winning Dexter. Licht’s scoring, described as “eerie”, employs his most diverse techniques- playing instruments upside down, sideways, and with human bones. The show follows Dexter Morgan, a serial killer turned executioner. Unable to be traced, he continues to kill only those that have committed murder themselves. In January, Showtime will be conducting a score remix contest of Daniel Licht’s “Blood Theme” from Dexter.

Daniel Licht enters new territory with his original score for the videogame Silent Hill: Downpour. Downpour will explore new territory the previous Silent Hill games have not yet ventured. Licht stated at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, “I’m inspired by the mood and the story. I try to come up with a sound world that I feel like will amplify and augment the player’s experience. I incorporated piano, industrial sounds, and the mandolin. Composing for videogames takes me back to the form of the music because it doesn’t always have to fit the visuals”.
Daniel Licht’s composing techniques are not limited to horror. He scores weekly ABC’s Body of Proof, a show following a medical examiner, giving way to the day to day turmoil she goes through- creating a feeling of apprehension and hardship. His most recent film, Dumbstruck, is a documentary about five ventriloquists and their “dummies” at the annual Vent Haven Convention in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky. Dumbstruck DVD and soundtrack are now available.
Daniel Licht got his musical start in independent films with Stephen King’s Thinner. After scoring Splendor for Gregg Araki, he went on to score Cowboy Up for Academy Award winning director Xavier Koller. He has also worked with director Alex Cox and was commissioned to work with actor and producer Ben Stiller.
The Third Annual Russian Horror Film Awards support the developing Russian horror industry and the Russian film service. The three day event includes a film festival, master classes, and an autograph signing event. Other honorees this year include director Stuart Gordon (Stuck), director AJ Annila (Sauna) and actress Jodelle Ferland (Twilight Saga: Eclipse).

AMANDA HOCKING will be signing the new release of her million ebook-selling SWITCHED (Tor) at the Forbidden Planet London Megastore on Saturday 21st January 1 – 2pm.

Amanda Hocking is 26 years old, lives in Minnesota and had not sold a single book before 15th April 2010. She has now sold over one million ebooks. She is a self-publishing phenomenon.

Her bestselling Trylle Trilogy is now to be available in paperback and ebook formats with additional, unseen and exclusive content. Acquired through a fierce international auction, Pan Macmillan brings us Switched, the first in the trilogy in January 2012.

Showrunner Steven Moffat on BBC1's breakfast programme 20 December 2011 declared that there was no 'Doctor Who' film in the works and if there should ever be one then it wouldn't step away from regular continuity.

Hope everyone is sighing with relief or whatever you use to relieve constipation.

This is a bit difficult to do as a poll without some nominations from you folk - sign in and write in.

What SF films have you bought on DVD this year have you watched more than three times and still going to watch a few more times.

PS Before you ask why I haven't put any choices myself yet is because I don't want to pre-empt any choices you might give.

Feedback / What sways your decision making process?
« on: December 08, 2011, 04:37:23 AM »
Hello everyone

Let's see if any of you lucky people want to contemplate and give an answer to this poll.

When you buy something genre related, do you consider future resell value ie a limited edition is likely to sell better than a bog standard DVD for instance.

There should be enough answers in the poll that match your taste. If there isn't, let me know and I'll add to the choice.

Vote today,
