Any good non-medieval European style fantasy novels?

Does anyone have any recommendatios for decent non-medieval European style fantasy novels?

It all seems to be orc, dragons and the same old same old at the moment, but maybe I'm just feeling jaded?

C.J. Cherryh's 'Morgaine Chronicles'.  Sort of between fantasy and SF but entirely wonderful.

That sounds interesting, I've read some of her hard(ish) SF books like Downbelow Station and Cyteen in the Alliance-Union universe.

There seems to be a bit of a trend at the moment for fantasy/SF hybrids (not that I mind, although I get the feeling some hardcore fans do).

They are worth tracking down but I don't know if they're still in print.  I've not seen them in bookshops for a long time.  They're also quite bleak but I really enjoyed them as there's a lot going on below the text.

Just to resurrect another old thread, have you read Faerie Tale by Raymond E Feist? It is a very good fantasy story set in the modern time.

Yarrow by Charles De Lint is also another interesting read. It is one of the few paperback books I have retained to read again at some point.

I remember enjoying Faerie Tale a lot when I read it, and most of the Charles De Lint books are worth a look - I most recently read Onion Girl, which was great.

I'm currently one book into the Soldier Son trilogy by Robin Hobb, and can't wait to get stuck into book 2. It's fantasy of course but if you were to parallel real world settings its most like a frontier tale, think settling the American West with indigenous cultures (other species here) and even some foreign plagues causing chaos a la smallpox. Maybe one to look at if you want fantasy away from the medieval setting. Robin Hobb in general is a great fantasy writer, and the Farseer trilogykept me up til the early hours when I read that.

Not sure if you've read the  Empire series by Ray Feist and Janny Wurts. It is based on Korean culture.  Much of it runs parallel to The Magician I, for one, think it's much better than The Magician.

Another book you could try is Faerie Tale: A Novel of Terror and Fantasy by Raymond E. Feist

It changed my opinion of fairies forever!
