Best fantasy worlds
« on: March 06, 2010, 11:20:37 AM »
I was wondering what people think are the best fantasy worlds in books?

Some of my own faves are Middle-Earth, Jackelia, Camaar from The Lies of Locke Lamora, and New Crobuzon by China Meiville.

How about the strange world of Elric, that seminal albino fantasy killer?

Let me put in a vote for Earthsea. And of course the various worlds that appear in Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy.

I agree with all of the above (except the Elric one as I've not read that yet) - books always get huge numbers of bonus points for having richly detailed worlds that I can get totally immersed in. I'm also fond of the worlds in the Sword of Truth series (Terry Goodkind), the Belgariad/Malloreon (David Eddings), The Chronicles of Amber (Roger Zelazny) and, while not strictly speaking just one world, the Culture universe of Iain M Banks. There are probably a dozen more that I'll think of later but those are the ones that immediately spring to mind.
