Things that a Science Fiction fan would never get wrong.
« on: March 03, 2011, 02:22:14 PM »
OK, folks, let's see if you people can write as well as you can read.

How do you spot the real SF fan? Do you drop a line and see if they correct you. Can they tell the difference between Sci-Fi and SF?  Is it their choice of authors, films or TV programmes.

I'm not going to do all the suggestions for you, just one to get you started.

A real SF fan would not confuse Frankestein with his monster.

Indulge me. What do you use??

Another obvious one is can they tell the difference between SF and Sci-Fi.

If you can't put a reply in and I'll run a poll for a true assessment.

A true SF fan would know that our star system is called a Solar System because the name of our sun is Sol.

Any other generic star system is just that, a star system.

Here's one that does cause some confusion even within our number:-

Ray Bradbury is a fantasy writer NOT a Science Fiction writer - and even he says that.

A SF fan can tell the difference between a Na'Vi and a Smurf.

(I hope)

Here's one I'm not so sure is common knowledge.

Does anyone else consider that the answer 42 for the secret of the universe is actually a computer error number?

Anyone checking Google will see it's a device error ergo, it isn't the answer.

I think it takes a few books before that becomes clear though. I love this series, it's one of the sets of books on my mother's impressive science fiction shelf and I started reading them probably early in my teens. It's sometimes hard to convince people it's science fiction and not fantasy!

Hello Vinxy

Re: Pern. Anne McCaffrey applied SF rules ie stayed within restrictions of what she created. The main thing she envised was how to have dragons on a colony planet where all advances were wiped away. As such, the colonisers went back to a feudal system. Without the dragons, the stories would just mirror that instead.

Which book before 'Dragonsdawn' convinced you it was SF and not fantasy??

A SF will note one significant similarity between the Tenctonese and the Gallifreyans.

If it tests you, let me know.

If you have the answer, add it to a reply here or if you want me to give the answer.

Having watched the 1966 film 'Fantastic Voyage', a true SF fan will realise that the patient with die in post-op by a protusion of Proteus debris.

Now here's something to ponder. Look at the film 'Westworld'. The Gunslinger's pistol has ammo that can only inflict damage on other robots.

No matter what software malfunction that makes them homocidal, how would this affect that ammo??

Would we have gotten this wrong today or showed what happened??

Knowing which two TV SF series theme musics end with a scream shout.

I'll give a clue, one was made in Australia and the other in the USA.

Just to see if anyone knows how to reply and not just read, I'll give you a week to see if you can work it out.
